The Ford Explorer Got a 1 out of 100 Score in Reliability

If you plan to get a brand-new vehicle, let alone a mid-sized SUV, do yourself a favor and skip the Ford Explorer altogether. This fact is based on the most recent Consumer Reports Reliability survey which gave the re-designed mid-sized SUV a score of 1 out of 100—that’s not a typo.

Consumer Reports says 2000-2019 Explorers are already plagued with problems ranging from engine and transmission problems to issues with the electrical system. The all-new 2020 Explorer though took it up a notch—in the wrong direction.

The non-profit group says the all-new Explorer is plagued with problems and issues, be it transmission (some required outright replacement), drive system, in-car electronics, power equipment, engine, and body hardware.

This record low reliability ranking is the latest in a long line of problems for the Explorer.

After refurbishing its Chicago assembly plant to build the new Explorer, production lagged behind due to quality concerns. It was so bad, Ford ended up shipping thousands of the mid-sized SUV to Flat Rock in Michigan to fix and finish them properly.

It has also been the subject of at least 7 recalls issued by the NHTSA.

According to the carmaker though, they’ve “worked relentlessly to address customer concerns” surrounding the Explorer. It remains to be seen how the 2021 model, which just started production in Chicago last month, will do in future Consumer Reports reliability surveys.
