Yes, Toyota Will Now Sell You a Foot-Operated Sanitizer Stand

We’ve seen enterprising Filipinos come up with their own version, but nothing beats one manufactured using the Toyota Production System. It’s for this reason that you can now buy your very own Toyota made “Shodoku Taishi”—a foot-operated sanitizer stand.

The foot-operated sanitizer stand will be sold at authorized Toyota dealerships in Japan starting December 1, 2020. It actually started as an initiative of employees at the carmaker’s various production plants who wanted to take action and prevent the spread of COVID-19 among colleagues.

After being used at Toyota’s various production facilities, they also begun distributing prototypes to healthcare institutions, refining and tweaking along the way. Naturally, Toyota also studied commercializing it, and after 30 or so prototypes, the end result is what you see here: something a regular buyer can purchase.

Setting the Shodoku Taishi or “sanitizer ambassador,” apart from those made by mom-and-pop engineers is that it can be dismantled easily for cleaning. Plus, it weighs just 3.2 kilograms (including the mat)—an almost 50 percent weigh reduction from the first version. Oh, and unlike other sanitizer stands, it can also be used by wheelchair users.

Now, in case you’re wondering, the cost of one of these Shodoku Taishi is 8,000 yen or about P 3,700. Toyota plans to produce around 2,000 to 2,500 of these per month, and they’re all made at their Kamigo Parts Center.

Will you consider buying one for your home or office?
