Early this year, Peugeot introduced the Landtrek, a pickup truck engineered by the French automaker’s Chinese JV partner, Changan. With neither brand a household name in the pickup truck segment, Peugeot decided to take the Landtrek on a grueling 26,000-kilometer journey to test its strengths and capabilities.
Destined for markets outside Europe—Latin America and Africa being the first two recipients, three Peugeot Landtreks set off from Los Cabos, Mexico with an attempt to reach Ushuaïa in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world by early next year.
The reliability, quality, toughness, and comfort of the Peugeot Landtrek will be put to the test on the roads and tracks of the South American continent during the 50-day trip.
Powered by a 1.9-liter diesel engine, it makes 150 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. Power is routed to either a 6-speed Getrag manual or a 6-speed Punch automatic. Putting that into perspective, it generates the very same outputs as the D-Max RZ4E.
Realizing that the one-ton pickup segment is key to strong global sales (around 2.5 million of them are sold annually), Peugeot believes its Landtrek has all the elements of success: reliability, ease of maintenance, versatility, real off-road capabilities, and of course towing and loading performance. Furthermore, it also has SUV-like comfort, according to the automaker.
The Peugeot Landtrek is confirmed for global markets with Mexico, Uruguay, Ecuador, Paraguay, Panama, Peru, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, and finally Chile in the first phase. This will then be followed by Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia in the second phase.
Peugeot has made no mention whether they plan to expand the sales of the Landtrek to other markets.
