This 2021 Mazda MX-5 Gets a Porsche-Like Name

With over 2,500 examples running across various circuits globally, the Mazda MX-5 is the most raced car in the world. With that in mind, it just makes sense to come up with a track-focused variant. And in the case of Mazda Australia, it also got a Porsche-like model name too. Meet the 2021 Mazda MX-5 GT RS.

Available in both soft-top and RF forms, the MX-5 GT RS offers more focused dynamics thanks to an upgraded suspension and braking system.

On the front axle, Mazda engineers have installed a Brembo brake package. This incorporates an opposed four-piston aluminum caliper arrangement on each corner, clamping a 280mm x 22mm front ventilated disc brake. The internal disc cooling fins have been designed in a ‘pillar’ arrangement to further assist brake cooling.

A high-performance brake pad specification offers stronger pedal feedback while improving fade resistance by 26 percent. The better braking performance aside, the Brembo front brake package actually reduces unsprung mass by 2 kilograms as well.

Together with the Brembo brakes, the MX-5 GT RS features 17-inch forged BBS alloy wheels fitted with 205/45R17 Bridgestone tires as well as Bilstein gas-pressurized dampers (all in all, this makes it fairly close to the limited-run 30th Anniversary Edition).

Lifting the hood reveals a solid alloy strut tower brace, linking the front suspension struts for improved rigidity and steering response.

Engine-wise, the MX-5 GT RS retains its 184-horsepower 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine. The sole transmission option is, of course, a 6-speed manual.

The introduction of the MX-5 GT RS in Australia caps off the other changes on the 2021 MX-5. These include wireless Apple CarPlay (!) as well as optional Pure White nappa leather upholstery. Exterior-wise, all variants also get black mirror caps.

For the Philippine market, it’s unlikely that Mazda will name it the MX-5 GT RS. It might become the 2021 MX-5 Club Edition though once it arrives here. It is worth noting that starting 2021, Mazda Philippines will be offering a personalized buying experience for the MX-5 with 78 available variants to choose from.
