Mercedes-Benz Will Now Make Your Entire Dashboard a Touchscreen

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the largest touchscreen infotainment system with its MBUX Hyperscreen. Measuring at 56 inches wide it’s more than three times bigger than the current industry standard—the one used by Tesla.

Set to debut on Mercedes-Benz’s all-electric flagship sedan, the EQS, it will serve as both the “brain and central nervous system of the car.”

Using OLED technology for the center and front passenger displays, Mercedes-Benz says the images will be crisp and brilliant. The tech allows for image pixels which are self-luminous. The high contrast also allows for excellent viewability regardless of angle and light condition. If the pixels are not in use, the remained switched off, making it appear deep black (or it can alternatively run things like an animated wallpaper).

The large screen size also allows for zero-layers—meaning there’s no need to scroll through sub-menus to access vehicle functions. Instead, everything is available in a situational and contextual way at the top of the driver’s field of vision.

Helping drivers and passengers navigate through a system devoid of any physical buttons, the MBUX Hyperscreen has 12 actuators beneath the touchscreen for haptic feedback.

It also has two coatings on the cover plate to reduce reflections and make cleaning easier. The curved glass itself consists of particularly scratch-resistant aluminum silicate.

The safety measures include predetermined breaking points alongside the side outlet openings as well as five holders which can yield in a targeted manner in a crash thanks to their honeycomb structure.

Some of the key technical specifications of the Hyperscreen are: 8 CPU cores, 24-gigabyte RAM, and 46.4 GB per second RAM memory bandwidth. It also as a one multifunction camera and one light sensor that helps adjust the brightness of the screen depending on the ambient conditions.

Even more interesting, the MBUX Hyperscreen also allows for individualized and personalized content that continuously learns.

For example, if you always call one particular person on the way home on Tuesday evenings, you will be asked to make a corresponding call on that day of the week and that specific time of day. A business card appears with their contact information and – if it’s stored – their photo will appear. All suggestions are linked to the user’s profile. If someone else drives on a Tuesday evening, this recommendation would not be made – or another one is made, depending on the preferences of the other user.
