Nissan to Halt All Assembly in the Philippines

Last year, Sta. Rosa City mayor Arlene Arcillas revealed that following Honda Cars Philippines’s decision to stop local assembly, Nissan will follow suit. It may have taken some time, but there’s now a definite time frame: March 2021.

The Japanese automaker has confirmed that they will stop production of its Almera sub-compact sedan. This means that if Nissan plans to bring in the next-generation Almera, it will be sourced likely from Thailand where the Navara and Terra are also assembled.

The decision was reached following the expiration of the assembly contract between Nissan Philippines, Inc. (NPI) and assembler Univation Motor Philippines, Inc. (UMPI) which is their vehicle assembly partner. An estimated 133 employees will be affected by the plant closure.

The Sta. Rosa plant closure is part of Nissan’s plan towards optimized production and efficient business operations in the ASEAN region, as part of the Nissan NEXT transformation plan.

For its part, UMPI says they will remain active in the Philippines and continue its other business operations in the country. Nissan is coordinating with UMPI to ensure a smooth transition.

The UMPI plant has total capacity of 18,000 units annually.
