Geely PH Sold 320 Coolrays Crossovers in December Alone


Even after the pandemic created an unprecedented uncertainty, Sojitz G Auto Philippines (SGAP), the exclusive distributor of Geely has proven last year that it can finish the year strong.

Based on the January 2021 report released by CAMPI and AVID, Geely has once again emerged as the best-selling among the 5-seater subcompact crossovers in December last year. This is the 4th month Geely has bagged this top-seller badge in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic.

SGAP President & CEO Mikihisa Takayama said “We have surprisingly rebounded to deliver our sales targets in most of the months last year. The Coolray became a top-seller among the 5-seater subcompact crossovers for 4 months in 2020. And after selling a total of 2,158 units last year, we landed on CAMPI and AVID’s top 10 spot for passenger vehicles in terms of sales.”

Of the 2,158 units sold last year, 24 percent of the total 2020 sales were generated last December. This was SGAP’s highest recorded sales in 2020 with 520 units sold.

The Geely Coolray first landed on the number 1 spot among the 5-seater subcompact crossovers in the country in June 2020 with 154 units sold then maintained its ranking in the month of July with 263 units sold. 3 months after, Geely regained its top-seller title in October last year.

Geely has a lot of reasons to start 2021 with high hopes. “As we adapt to the drastic changes this pandemic has brought us, Geely Philippines is facing 2021 more aggressively in promoting its core models like the Coolray and Okavango. We are seeing that majority of our sales for this year will be coming from these models,” SGAP Executive Vice President Yosuke Nishi said.

“In terms of network expansion, we are eyeing to open more than 20 more dealerships this year. 8 outlets in the first half of the year and the rest by the second half,” Nishi added.

  2. Reliability is still the main concern. Besides, geely fanboys still maintain that since geely bought ford's volvo shares, parang volvo na rin ang geely! How simplistic.

    1. Ganito na lang boss. Isipin mo, nung time na nagsisimula palang mga Japanese, di pa gaanong hightech nun. Wala pang gaanong mga computers na nagagamit sa pagdesign ng mga kotse. Nangopya lang din ang mga Japanese sa mga American at Europeans. Nung time ng mga Korean, ganun din, pero syempre unti-unti nang nagiging high tech. Nangkopya lang din sila nung una hanggang sa nakapagdevelop na sila ng sarili nilang technology. May tulong ng mga foreigner syempre.
      Ngayon, nagsimulang lumago economy ng China dahil sa low cost, high volume manufacturing nila. Poor quality pa noon, totoo yan. Dahil ang focus nila ay gumawa ng madami at magbenta sa murang halaga. Dahil sa ganung kalakaran, naging kilala ang China sa mababang kaledad ng produkto.
      Tingin ko, nagkamali sila dun. Nagsuffer masyado reputasyon nila.
      Fast forward, nagboom bigla technology. Nauso smart phones at high speed internet. Mas naging makabago na rin mga computer sa design. Sa madaling sabi, yung China na puro low quality products noon ay gumaling din sa pagkopya sa iba dahil nga sa technology.
      Pero ang di magaya ng iba ay yung low cost, high volume strategy ng China. Ang daming factors pero kasama diyan yung cost of labor, policy ng China at Chinese culture. Isa sa mga katangian ng mga Tsino ay sobrang sipag magtrabaho. Uso sa kanila ang 7 days na trabaho at sobrang minsanan lang ang holiday. Unti-unti silang natuto sa pagkakamali nila na gagawa lang ng produkto na mura pero pangit. Ngayon, di lang yung low cost, high volume ang kaya nila. Pati quality, meron na rin sila.
      Isipin mo boss, kunwari may stainless steel na kutsara. May made in China at made in Japan. Siguro ay mas matibay yung sa Japan dahil nga mas makapal yung bakal na ginamit. Mas maganda yung materyales habang yung sa China, mas mura nga pero mas manipis yung bakal at di purong stainless steel ginamit, kaya kinalawang. Pero habang nagtatagal ay naisip ng mga Tsino na mas bumenta yung made in Japan. Kaya ang ginawa nila, kinapalan din nila yung bakal at talagang matibay na stainless ginamit nila. Pero ang lamang nila, kaya nila ibenta ng mas mura. 1.2 billion nga naman population nila kumpara sa mahigit na 130 million ng Japan. Ibig sabihin, mas madami silang workers na gagawa para sa kanila.
      Tayo ngang Pinoy, kahit yung jeepney na kinuha natin sa mga Amerikano, di man lang natin na-improve. Mausok pa rin. Ipe-phase out na nga dahil nakakapollute sa kapaligiran. Samantalang yung China, nagawa nilang pagandahin yung production nila kahit nagsimula sila sa panggagaya at low quality. Something to think about boss.
      Di ako fanboy ng Geely. Malamang Japanese car pa rin bilhin ko kung sakali. May tatlong Japanese car kami. Pero di maikakaila na sobrang laki na ng improvement ng China, pati sa quality. Di naman siguro sila magbebenta ng kotse na sira na after 1 year. Malamang after 3 years, lalabas na sakit niyan. Pero tandaan natin na kahit saang brand ngayon, lalabas na sakit ng sasakyan after 3 years. Normal wear and tear lang ba. At kahit Japanese giant na Toyota ay milyones ang recall. May mga frame na kinakalawang. May mga unintended acceleration. At kung anu-ano pa. Nangyari yun dahil naging global na ang Toyota. Ibig sabihin, di na talaga made in Japan lahat ng auto nila. Eh dito nga sa Pinas, ina-assemble na Vios. Ang punto diyan, nagtataas-baba yung quality dahil nga multinational na yung manufacturing. Kahit China nakinabang din diyan. May mga Japanese, European at American engineer na rin sila. Yung mga Chinese kung saan-saan na nakarating at nag-aral ng engineering. Ang suma, bumaba quality ng lahat dahil nga kailangan magbenta ulit. Negosyo eh. Pero yung mga dating kulelat ay nakahabol, gaya ng Korea at China. India nga, humahabol na rin. Tayo kaya boss, kailan tayo magbebenta ng kotse sa mga banyaga? Sana magawa rin natin, kahit mangkopya muna. Class A ba. Tapos magkaroon din tayo ng original na maipagmamalaki.

    2. with your assumption and mentality, you actually had the simplistic mind. the coolray's platform was co-developed with volvo cars, the BMA platform will be used in the upcoming volvo xc20. the engine and the wet type dct transmission are co-developed with volvo as well. it shares components with volvo and lynk & co sub-brand of geely. so yes, the fanboys are simplistic with these facts

  3. Proud Geely Coolray owner here. No issues so far. Besides the nice interior and exterior, plus the tech, super sarap syang idrive. Brings back the fun in driving talaga. It is a total game changer! No choice other car manufacturers but to step up on their game. Or else, Geely will eat their car sales. It's happening now. Imagine how many cars they will sell in 5 years. Nothing beats a good looking car both inside and out, loaded with high tech feature and powerful engine at an affordable price point. Did I mention that it is fun to drive?

  5. Coolray has a powerful engine. Best in class. Japanese cars are underpowered and bare compared to what they sold in america.

  6. At least Geely is not state-owned in China. What is in question is Ford's JV with Jianling, which is a state-owned enterprise. I think Geely will make a mark here in PH in the coming years.
