Mitsubishi reveals the all-new 2022 Outlander—a compact SUV that features the brand’s new design direction.
Based on the product concept “I-Fu-Do-Do”, which means authentic and majestic in Japanese, the all-new Outlander is meant to convey rugged performance and a high-quality feel to its design. Styling emphasizes its presence with the next-generation Dynamic Shield front face, available 20-inch wheels, and a hexagonal motif on the tailgate that’s meant as a nod to the Pajero.
Riding on an all-new platform, the Outlander uses ultra-high tensile strength steel in its construction for increased rigidity. The multi-link suspension and dual pinion electric power steering also promises better ride comfort, while providing a direct, linear feel.
Under the hood is a new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to an 8-speed CVT with sport mode. Also found in the 2021 X-Trail, it makes identical power at 181 horsepower and 254 Nm of torque.
For the 4WD model, a hydraulic clutch driven by an electric motor is used in the center coupling device that varies front and rear torque distribution. Moreover, an improved S-AWC system now integrates active yaw control for both front and rear wheels. And like most modern compact SUVs, the all-new Outlander is equipped with driver-selectable modes—six for 4WD models and five for 2WD models.
Inside, a linear instrument panel gives the Outlander a spacious and roomy look while producing a functional form that promotes excellent visibility. The upper part is covered with a soft padding wrapped in leather, and stitching has been applied to project a high-quality feel. The door panels feature a large area of door inserts, and the same soft padding as the instrument panel and floor console sides is used to create a high-quality and comfortable space.
Interior technology includes a 12.3-inch full digital driver’s display, a large 9-inch center screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and even a 10.8-inch heads-up display. A Bose premium sound system is available, and this one offers a total of 10 speakers.
Unlike other compact SUVs, the Outlander retains its three-row, seven seat configuration which is unique in the segment. The second-row seats have a sliding and reclining function, as well as a 4:2:4 split division, allowing two adult passengers to comfortably sit in the second row even when carrying long items such as skis.
In terms of safety, the Outlander gets Mitsubishi’s MI-PILOT Assist which integrates adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, as well as the usual airbags (11 in total), ABS with EBD, stability control, and more.
The all-new 2022 Outlander goes on sale first in the United States this April 2021, with other markets to follow.
Can't wait for Mitsubishi to bring this in the Philippines on 2030.
