Porsche will soon be assembling vehicles in Southeast Asia, if a report from a local Malaysian newspaper is proven to be true.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the Edge (via Bloomberg) says the German automaker will make Malaysia its Southeast Asia production hub. It will be the brand’s first assembly plant outside of Germany.
Porsche will partner with Inokom, a unit of the Malaysian conglomerate Sime Darby, for the venture. The plant will be located within the same area in Kedah that currently houses production for BMW, MINI, and Mazda.
Christian Weiss, Porsche’s deputy director of corporate communications, was quoted as saying that Southeast Asia has great potential, and that the company is continuously examining options for further growth.
If the reports are proven true, and Porsche does start producing vehicles in Malaysia, this could result in more affordable models. For example, BMW Philippines brought in limited numbers of its 5 Series luxury sedan produced in Malaysia which was priced almost a million less than its German-assembled counterpart.
