Mazda to Start Assembling CX-30 in Malaysia

Mazda will be assembling its CX-30 in Malaysia very soon. According to investor reports on Bermaz Auto, the assembler and distributor of Mazda vehicles in both Malaysia and the Philippines, was given the green light by Mazda Corporation to start assembling its compact crossover in Kulim, Kedah province.

The addition of a third line at the Inokom assembly plant, which also assembles the CX-5 and CX-8 represents a RM 200 million (around P 2.3 billion) investment.

Though no official time frame has been given, it’s been reported that the CKD kits will only start arriving in 2022, perhaps in time for the CX-30’s first major product improvement or IPM in Mazda-speak.

The investor report goes into detail saying that a shift to CKD will potentially make the CX-30 more affordable. The figure being thrown around is RM 15,000 or around P 177,200.

When asked about this development, Mazda Philippines President Steven Tan says that “nothing has been decided yet.” He adds that the plans currently surround the Malaysian domestic market only.

But, in case Mazda Philippines does get the go signal to start sourcing the CX-30 from Malaysia, this could potentially make it more affordable (or at the very least protect it from any possible tariffs imposed by the Philippine government).
