The 2022 Kia EV6 GT Can Challenge Supercars in a Drag Race

Kia may have already shown off its first dedicated battery electric vehicle, the 2022 EV6, but they’ve saved the best info for last: it’s coming with a high-performance GT version.

Although the Korean automaker isn’t exactly known for creating high-performance automobiles, the EV6 GT does offer exhilarating performance matching that of a supercar thanks to its 0 to 100 km/h time of 3.5 seconds, and a top speed of 260 km/h. Powering the EV6 GT is a set of electric motors with a combined output of 585 horsepower and 740 Nm of torque.

This perfectly illustrates Kia’s new design philosophy: Opposites United because despite the mind-blowing performance, the EV6 is extremely roomy, offering an ultra-long wheelbase of 2,900 mm, despite its compact 4,695 mm overall length.

Inside, the EV6 promotes an open, yet high-tech feel. Front and center are its 12-inch dual curved screens, connected with reinforced glass. It also has an Augmented Reality (AR) heads-up display, and even a 14-speaker Meridian surround audio system.

A variety of battery and motor configurations will be on offer. Aside from the high-performance GT that nets 585 horsepower and 740 Nm of torque, the EV6 is also available in a rear-wheel drive 229 horsepower, 350 Nm of torque version, and a 325 horsepower, 605 Nm of torque version. That said, only the EV6 GT will come with electronic Limited Slip Differential that gives added confidence and handling in all conditions. Equipped with the biggest battery—a 77.4-kWh, it can travel over 510 kilometers on a single charge.

The EV6 offers both 800V and 400V charging capabilities, without the need for additional components or adapters. The car is capable of a high-speed charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes on all variations or a top-up charge of 100 kilometers of driving range in less than four and a half minutes when pairing 2WD with the 77.4-kWh battery option.

The 2022 EV6 will be produced in South Korea. It will go on-sale in select global markets starting from the second half of 2021.

The EV6 is the first of 11 new battery electric vehicles from Kia by 2026, seven built on the E-GMP, and four based on existing models. It also begins their mid-to-long term strategy on electrification. By 2030, 40 percent of Kia’s total sales by 2030 will be electrified be it full electric, plug-in hybrid, or hybrid-electric.
