Dodge to Roll Out "Two-Factor Authentication" for Challenger, Charger Models

Dodge has found an ingenious way to protect its high-powered Charger and Challenger models from thieves.

Rolling out via an automotive software upgrade, Dodge Challengers and Charger equipped with either the 392-cubic inch (6.4-liter) HEMI V8 or supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 engines will allow owners to input a four-digit security code on the Uconnect infotainment system.

Even when the car thief gets a hold of the key, if the security feature is turned on, it limits the vehicle’s engine speed to idle or around 675 rpm. With that, the car will make a peak 2.8 horsepower and 29.8 Nm of torque. Think of this as the automotive equivalent of two-factor authentication—something normally seen on online shopping sites.

The best part is that every Dodge Challenger and Charger equipped with the Uconnect 4C infotainment system can get the complimentary update. The update is installed free of charge by any authorized Dodge dealer. Dodge says the new security feature will be made available in the late second quarter of 2021.
