It’s official: the 47th Tokyo Motor Show 2021 is canceled. This marks the first time the biennial motor show has been canceled since its inception 1954.
The decision was announced by Akio Toyoda, president of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association or JAMA.
“We have concluded that it will be difficult to offer our main programs where many visitors get to experience attractive features of mobility in a safe environment,” Toyoda said at a JAMA press conference. “The next time, we would like to hold an improved event to be called Tokyo Mobility Show. We would like to ask for your continued support.”
The Tokyo Mobility Show that Toyoda mentioned is a possible re-branding of the show, especially with carmakers facing the challenges of CASE or Connectivity, Autonomous Sharing/Subscription, and Electrification.
JAMA says they are looking at 2022 or 2023 to introduce a new show format.
The most recent Tokyo Motor Show, held back in 2019 was a resounding success with a 70 percent surge in attendance compared to 2017 despite the lack of foreign brands.
JAMA reinvented the show with a theme-park-like concept as compared to a traditional auto exposition. This will likely be the template for future shows moving forward.
