Toyota PH Says Avanza MPVs, Rush SUVs Now Part Of Fuel Pump Recall

Toyota Motor Philippines is recalling more vehicles due to faulty fuel pumps. The new recall (or service campaign as the carmaker calls them) covers an additional 36,729 vehicles from the initial 10,776 units, bringing the total of affected Toyota vehicles to 47,505.

The initial list covered only the Fortuner powered by the 2.7-liter 2TR-FE 4-cylinder engine. Since then, it was expanded to cover the FJ Cruiser, Corolla, Innova, Alphard, and Land Cruiser Prado as well.

In this, the third extension, the Avanza and Rush are now confirmed to be included in the fuel pump service campaign.

A total of 18,245 Avanza units have been identified in the service campaign, and this covers those produced between October 2017 to July 2019. Meanwhile, a total of 18,484 Rush units are affected, and these were produced between April 2018 to July 2019.

The fuel pump issue affecting these Toyota vehicles surround its impellers. They were found to have been manufactured with a low density. If these impellers have a lower surface strength, but were exposed to drying solvents used in production for a long period of time, it may cause surface cracking making them inoperative.

An inoperative fuel pump, Toyota says, could result in the illumination of the check engine light, rough engine running, engine not being able to start, or stalling at low speeds. In rare instances though, a vehicle stall may occur during high-speed driving as well, increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall has also affected selected Honda, Mitsubishi, and Mazda models as well.

Toyota Motor Philippines says that they have begun notifying affected owners through official notification letters, and that the replacement will be done at no cost to customers.

Owners can also check out the online VIN checker to see if their units are affected, or contact their respective authorized Toyota dealer. Make sure to ask about the latest fuel pump service campaign.
