Following the launch of the GR Supra and GR Yaris, Toyota is launching the third global model in Toyota Gazoo Racing’s series of sportscar, and this one is very familiar to Filipinos: the GR 86.
Scheduled to launch in Japan by the third quarter of 2021, the second-generation 2022 GR 86 continues its predecessor’s goal of delivering the pure joy associated with front-engine, rear-wheel drive sportscars.
According to Toyota, while the GR 86 is still jointly developed with Subaru, the two vehicles are focused on imbuing their respective models with a distinct driving feel. The all-new GR 86 will not just satisfy current 86 fans and owners, but will also deliver a “satisfying driving performance of the highest order.”

The front carries the GR-specific Functional Matrix grille, while still keeping the distinctive stance of a front-engine, rear-wheel drive vehicle. Its low, horizontal underbody and tapered rear combine to create a broad, low center of gravity appearance.
Powering the GR 86 is a 2.4-liter normally-aspirated flat-4. Compared to the Subaru BRZ, the Toyota has a higher output —235 horsepower to 228 horsepower, while torque remains the same at 250 Nm. Thanks to this, the 0 to 100 km/h sprint takes 6.3 seconds.
The dimensions of the 2022 GR 86 are almost identical to the previous model, but the use of aluminum for the roof panel and fenders contribute to a lower curb weight and lower center of gravity.
Compared to the previous 86, the body rigidity of the 2022 GR 86 has been improved, with the goal of offering pleasurable handling in all speed ranges―from urban driving to the upper limits of performance. Torsional rigidity has been enhanced by approximately 50 percent over the previous model for greater steering stability.
Inside, the GR 86 features a 7-inch TFT screen. Its opening animation sequence is inspired by the piston movements of the GR 86's horizontally opposed engine, and fosters a sense of excitement even before the drive begins.
The automatic version of the GR 86 also uses Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. This system of comprehensive safety technologies provides safety support during everyday driving; pre-collision safety technologies that help avoid or reduce collision impacts; and emergency rescue support and secondary collision avoidance support in the event of an accident.

Looks clean! I'm quite surprised that the 86 has more power than the BRZ lol. Who would have thought Subaru would detune their own version while Toyota gets the uprated model.
ReplyDeleteI believe both the Toyota GR 86 and Subaru BRZ have the same power output. 235PS is for Japan-spec. US models get 228hp.

ReplyDeleteWhy the Biggest World Carmaker TOYOTA is relying on other small car company to make Sports Car for them instead of producing it's own real SportsCar?
ReplyDeleteMakes development and production cheaper so that they can price it cheap too
DeleteI saw a leak from those who preordered - 2.4mil - not exactly cheap. The rest of the world are having the twins priced the same as the base manual Honda Civic Si, yet only in da pilipins, the highest spec CVT Si is 800k cheaper than the manual BRZ 2022.
DeleteCan confirm. It's P 2.4M for the MT and 2.5M for the AT:
