BMW is readying its own two-door coupe based on the GR Supra’s underpinnings with the world’s first look at the 2022 2 Series.
As a refresher, the current GR Supra doesn’t ride on a Toyota platform. Instead, it shares its underpinnings (and engine) with the BMW Z4 which in turn, uses the German automaker’s CLAR architecture. It holds the distinction of being the first non-BMW to actually ride on that platform. Now, the distinction between these two—the BMW Z4 and the Toyota GR Supra—rests on one being a top-down roadster, and the other, a coupe. That distinction is going out the window thanks to the newest 2022 BMW 2 Series.
Confirmed for a global release mid-2021, the all-new 2022 2 Series continues to ride on a rear-wheel drive architecture, despite earlier rumors of a full switch to front-wheel drive. The shortened CLAR architecture used by the all-new 2 Series enables not just standard rear-wheel drive (all-wheel drive will be an available option), but a perfect 50/50 weight distribution, and the ability to use BMW’s family of inline-6 engines. The carmaker goes further to say that the 2022 2 Series benefits from a stiffened architecture (up 12 percent in torsional rigidity), and a chassis tuned for agility.
Already announced ahead of launch is the M240i—powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6. Like that engine’s counterparts in the BMW Z4 and 2021 GR Supra (not the one available locally), it generates 382 horsepower routed through an 8-speed automatic. And get this, it will come with a rear-biased BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system (unlike the Z4 and GR Supra which is rear-wheel drive only) as well as a fully-variable, electronically-controlled M sports differential.
