Vehicle Importers See 13 Percent Decline in April 2021 Sales as Suzuki PH Takes Lead in PC, LCV Segment

The Association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors or AVID saw its April 2021 sales numbers follow a similar trend to CAMPI’s April figures, dropping 13 percent compared to March 2021 figures. A total of 20,353 units were sold for the entire month.

The drop is attributed to the Philippines’s largest market, the National Capital Region (NCR) and surrounding provinces placed under the most stringent lockdown—Enhanced Community Quarantine or ECQ to curb rising COVID-19 cases. ECQ ran from March 29 to April 11. The NCR accounts for roughly 70 percent of new vehicle sales in the Philippines.

For the month of April, Suzuki was the clear leader in the Passenger Car (PC) segment, selling 591 units. In second place is Hyundai at 314, and Ford in third at 131 units.

Meanwhile in the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment which includes SUVs and pickup trucks, Suzuki managed to move 1,695 units to claim the number one spot. Ford is in second with 1,368 units and Hyundai is in third at 603 units.

Despite the month-on-month decline, AVID saw its sales year-to-date rise 40 percent. The PC segment recorded a 16 percent increase from 4,574 units in 2020 to 5,328 units this year. Suzuki is the best-selling PC brand with 2,658 units sold followed by Hyundai at 1,798 units and Ford at 539 units.

In the Light Commercial Vehicle Segment, the growth was much bigger at 44 percent (14,314 units versus 9,906 units in 2020) year-to-date. Ford leads the segment with 6,023 units sold followed by Suzuki with 3,732 units sold, and Hyundai with 2,069 units. Geely is in fourth with 1,616 units sold.

Meanwhile, in the Commercial Vehicle segment which covers trucks and buses, Hyundai saw a 102 percent increase versus March 2021 with 293 units sold.

“They say you cannot emerge from challenging times untransformed. With these encouraging figures, I say we at AVID have boldly transformed ourselves and have become even better at what we do, which is to provide our customers an end-to-end mobility experience that best suits the needs of the times,” said AVID President Maria Fe Perez-Agudo.
