After being unveiled last year, sales were originally meant to start in mid-2021, but now, that’s been delayed to the final months of the year. Moreover, the first handful of units will be made available only for Japan.

According to Nissan, they have received around 200,000 reservations for the Ariya, but only “tens of thousands” will be made available. For U.S. and European buyers, it will only be released two months after its release in Japan.

Nissan began taking preorders for the Ariya which will come in a limited-edition aesthetics package. The limited edition comes with a panoramic glass roof, premium Nappa leather seats, and a Bose sound system. It also gets illuminated kick plates, floor mats with a Japanese stone garden motif, and a choice between five two-tone exterior colors including Burgundy with Midnight Black (see top photo).

The Ariya packs either a 66 kWh or 91 kWh battery, enough for a range between 430 to 610 kilometers based on powertrain. Power ranges from 160 kw (217 horsepower) to 290 kw (394 horsepower), while torque is rated from 300 Nm in the base B6 to 600 Nm in the highest trim B9 e-4ORCE. The B9 does 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds—just as fast as the Nissan 370Z.

Nissan also calls the Ariya their most technologically advanced car to date. It comes with ProPilot 2.0 which has single-lane autonomous driving as well as a complete suite of driver assist technology including Nissan’s Safety Shield system. Features such as Intelligent Around View Monitor, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Emergency Braking and Rear Automatic Emergency Braking are standard.

In Japan, the Ariya starts at 6.6 million yen (P 2.872 million) and tops out at 7.9 million yen (P 3.43 million).
