May 2021 Marks 8th Straight Month Of Growth For Toyota

Toyota Motor Corporation continued its strong performance with its eighth consecutive month of increase. The carmaker sold 840,303 units in May alone—a 45.8 percent increase compared to 2020. Cumulatively, the brand, including its premium Lexus division, sold a total of 4,159,875 units from January to May this year or a 35.7 percent increase compared to the same period in 2020.

The strong global sales are attributed to the excellent performance of its Camry and Corolla sedans as well as the Venza Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) SUV and Highlander in North America. Meanwhile in Japan, the Harrier (also the Venza) and the Yaris carried the torch for Toyota, while in China, it was the Camry, Corolla, and RAV4.

In the Asia region, government-led stimulus is helping certain markets recover. For example, Indonesia sold 21,203 units last month, solidifying its position as the second best-selling market for Toyota just behind China (168,890). Thailand is in third at 19,767.

Meanwhile, Toyota Motor Philippines continues its strong recovery posting 10,779 in May. For the first five months of the year, they have sold 52,516 units.

In terms of production, Toyota continues to brush off the effects of the semi-conductor shortage with May 2021 figures up 83.4 percent compared to last year. In total, 671,097 Toyota and Lexus models rolled off the assembly line. Cumulatively, they’ve produced 3,685,654 units so far from January to May 2021.

Last month, a total of 4,988 Vios and Innova units rolled off the assembly line in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. In total, 20,435 units have been assembled so far from January to May 2021.
