MG Makes Headway In Europe, Overtakes Alfa Romeo In Sales

MG Motor is making headway in Europe as they continue to post strong sales across the continent.

The brand, owned by China’s SAIC posted a 79 percent growth for the first four months of 2021. Selling 10,811 units, they managed to overtake Alfa Romeo.

The British brand’s revival started in the UK, but has now expanded to 13 other countries. The ZS sub-compact SUV is MG’s biggest seller by far, selling 6,131 units followed by the HS compact SUV.

The UK though remains MG’s biggest European market, accounting for three quarters of total sales in the first four months. There, almost a third of its sales were pure EVs to the end of May this year, accounting for a 5.5 percent share of the UK EV market in total.

MG sales are also growing in Norway where the ZS EV was the 14th biggest seller in the first five months of the year at 1,242 units.

MG will expand its line-up in Europe to include the Marvel R electric SUV, and the electric MG5 wagon

The MG5 is already sold in the UK and the car’s competitive price and long 444-kilometer range is attracting customers, particularly from the ride-hailing market. Drivers also like the extra size of the MG5 compared to the competition.

Meanwhile, the Marvel R is intended to be a flagship model that will accelerate to 100 km/h seconds from rest in 4.9 seconds.

MG’s European sales increased 81 percent to 25,619 vehicles last year.

MG was formerly part of the UK’s Rover Group until it was bought by China’s SAIC Motor in 2007. Its cars are built in China and share technology with SAIC’s Roewe brand.
