After showing off its design in full last month, Kia has finally revealed the mechanical bits of the all-new 2022 Sportage. In a pleasant surprise to fans of the diesel, the Korean automaker has confirmed that its oil burner is living to fight another day.
Part of the launch engine line-up, the R 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine gets a new variable geometry turbocharger that helps it pump out 186 horsepower and 417 Nm of torque. And despite diesel’s reputation as being not-to-friendly emissions-wise, Kia says they’re reworked the engine to make sure it drives down exhaust gases while further enhancing its real-world fuel economy. Mated to the engine is an 8-speed automatic with a revised gearing for better response.
For those who prefer their Sportage with a gasoline engine, Kia’s got a 1.6-liter direct-injected turbo 4-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 265 Nm of torque as well. This engine is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic with a 6-speed manual still available on the menu.
Aside from these two engines, Kia will also offer the Sportage in both hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions as well along with more gasoline and diesel engine combinations.
Powertrain aside, the 2022 Sportage gets an all-new Terrain mode that optimizes the all-wheel drive system based on the road condition and environment. Outside the Terrain mode, it has selectable driving modes with Comfort, Eco, Sport, and Smart.
The all-new platform meanwhile, dubbed N3, promises a refined, stable, and comfortable ride. And get this, it’s also available with an Electric Control Suspension that controls the dampers in real-time.
Kia says the all-new Sportage will hit showrooms globally by the fourth quarter of this year.
Hope it will the same price
