The top performers include the 3 Series with a growth of 49.1 percent compared to the same period in 2020. With sales growth of 33.3 percent, the BMW 5 Series also underlined its strong position in the upper mid-size premium segment. The BMW X3 also climbed 43.9 percent in the first six months of the year with the fully-electric iX3 giving sales of their mid-sized crossover a significant boost.

The high-performance BMW M brand also saw its sales climb 39.4 percent to 83,357 units. The M3 and M4, as well as the X5 M and X6 M, made a significant contribution to this all-time sales high.

Despite the great performance, BMW admits that the global semiconductor shortage may impact their sales during the rest of the year.

Still, in the coming years, the automaker confirmed that fully electric versions of their 5 Series, 7 Series, and X1 (along with the successor to the MINI Countryman) are in the works. Between now and 2025, the company plans to increase its sales of fully-electric models by an average of well over 50 percent per year—to more than ten times the number of units sold in 2020.

The BMW Group, which includes MINI and Rolls-Royce expects fully electric vehicles to account for at least 50 percent of its global sales in 2030. Over the next ten years or so, the BMW Group plans to release a total of about ten million fully-electric vehicles onto the roads.
