Jeep is billing their updated 2022 Compass as their most technologically-advanced compact SUV ever fitting it with a host of next-generation technologies along with a refreshed exterior and interior design.
Taking on an appearance first seen in the Chinese domestic model, the 2022 Compass has a re-sculpted front-end. The trademark seven-slot grille is now surrounded in high-gloss black accents to draw the eye to the slim LED headlights. The lower grille has been enlarged as well not just for aesthetics, but to maximize engine cooling as well.
Speaking of power, for 2022, the North American Compass gets a 2.4-liter “Tigershark” 4-cylinder engine with 177 horsepower and 233 Nm of torque. This is mated to either a nine (4WD) or six-speed (2WD) automatic transmission.
In China, it makes similar power figures—173 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque, but tractive effort is provided by a turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. This engine is mated to either a 7-speed dual clutch for 2WD models or a 9-speed torque converter automatic for 4WD models.
Built on Stellantis’ small wide global architecture, the Compass is made of 65 percent high-strength steel. It also has fully independent suspension all around. For 4WD models, two systems are available both of which can send all available torque to the rear wheels enabling optimal grip in low-traction conditions. In the Trail Rated Trailhawk, it goes further with a 20:1 crawl ratio and low range.
Inside, the Compass is almost fully redesigned. It has a new 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment display at the middle and a 10.25-inch frameless full-color TFT digital cluster. Tech aside, there’s ample storage and improved levels of craftsmanship.
Coming to the Jeep Compass is Highway Assist which is their semi-autonomous driving system. Using multiple sensors, including radars and cameras, it adds lane-centering and adaptive cruise control to its list of assistive features. On top of these features include automatic emergency braking, a 360-degree camera, and a park assist feature that can automatically park it in both parallel and perpendicular spaces.
No word on when Jeep Philippines will bring in the refreshed Compass for the local market. However, given that the refreshed model is already on sale in China, it’s just going to be a matter of time before it makes it to showrooms here nationwide.
