As crowds returned to the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed, McLaren Automotive scored a sensational victory with their 720S GT3X.
Competing in the Timed Shootout Final, the track-only 720S GT3X clocked a time of just 45.01 seconds, more than a second clear of the second place Subaru “Airslayer” STI’s 46.20 seconds.
Designed and developed in-house by the motorsport arm of McLaren Automotive, McLaren Customer Racing, each 720S GT3X is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine making 720 horsepower with an extra 30 horsepower available via a “push to pass” system. This is compared to the carbon-bodied STI which had more power—862 horsepower. The McLaren though weighs only 1,210 kilograms, and with that, has a power-to-weight ratio of 620 horsepower per ton.
McLaren says the 720S GT3X is still available for sale worldwide but not through regular McLaren dealers or distributors (sorry, Philippines). It’s only sold in the 11 McLaren Motorsports retails globally.
