Nissan understands that electric vehicles may pose a threat to pedestrians and cyclists because they emit almost no sound. This is why carmakers have started adopting artificially-simulated driving sounds to alert road users of the presence of an EV.
In Europe, the 2021 Nissan Leaf comes with a new Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) which the brand calls, “Canto.” Canto will become Nissan’s signature EV sound. You can check out how it sounds like in the video below.
Teaming up with an elite team of sound designers, Nissan Japan carefully created Canto. It can be adapted for regional tastes using a spectrum of sonic palettes. Regardless, the sound has been composed to ensure it varies in tone and pitch depending on whether the EV is accelerating, decelerating, or reversing.
The system is automatically activated when travelling at speeds below 30 km/h. According to Nissan, it’s designed to complement its surroundings while still being clearly audible.
Aside from emitting low-speed sounds, the 2021 Nissan Leaf also gains in-car Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, as well as blind spot warning and a camera-based rearview mirror (Intelligent Rear View Mirror).
