Peugeot is entering the 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship and they’re using this, the 9X8. Powered by a gasoline-electric hybrid engine driving all four wheels, it’s a rare occasion when both engineering and design departments collaborate to make sure it doesn’t just go fast, but looks fast as well.
The biggest departure from traditional race cars is the Peugeot 9X8’s lack of a rear wing. While rear wings have been a fixture on racing cars as early as the 1960s, the French carmaker wanted a more novel solution. They didn’t go into detail (trade secrets and all that), but they did say that the rear end is “as aerodynamic as possible.”
Of course, Peugeot Design also incorporated the latest design signatures of the brand from the claw-like strokes of the lamps to the new Lion Head logo on the front. The Kryptonite acid green/yellow highlights are nods to existing Peugeot Sport models as well.
As planned, the 9X8 combines a rear-mounted 2.6-liter bi-turbo V6 (680 horsepower) along with a 200 kW (272 horsepower) front-mounted electric motor. It uses a 7-speed sequential gearbox along with a high-density 900-volt battery co-developed by Peugeot Sport and Saft, a subsidiary of longtime partner Total.
Will Peugeot actually be able to race without a massive rear wing? Well, all eyes will be on them when they start racing next year.
