This is Lotus’ last internal combustion engine car: the 2022 Emira. And while it signifies a bookend of sorts for the prestigious British sportscar brand, they happen to throw everything at it to build a mid-engined offering that’s a quantum leap not just in performance, but in practicality, comfort, and technology as well.
The Emira has been developed on a new lightweight bonded aluminum chassis. Measuring in at 4,412 mm in length; 1,895 mm in width; 1,225 mm in height; and with a 2,575 mm wheelbase, it carries a design clearly inspired by their all-electric Evija flagship.
The first edition of cars, set for deliveries by early next year will be powered by a Toyota-sourced, Lotus-honed supercharged 3.5-liter V6—the same one found in the Exige and Evora. After that, Lotus will move to Mercedes-AMG power, specifically, a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. Cars will be available with a manual, automatic, and dual clutch transmission.
So final power figures have been revealed yet, but Lotus is targeting somewhere between 360 to 400 horsepower, and 430 Nm of torque. With that, the Emira will go from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4.5 seconds, and top speeds will be up to 290 km/h. The car, at its lightest will be 1,405 kilograms.
Inside, Lotus prides itself with the Emira’s simple, yet highly ergonomic cabin. Yet, there’s also a huge step storage space and even practicality. For example, they promise best-in-class ingress/egress and headroom. It will also come with technologies such as a push button engine start/stop, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, and even an Advanced Driver Assistance System or ADAS.
Access to the car’s infotainment system is via a 10.25-inch centrally mounted touch-screen, with an additional 12.3-inch TFT driver’s display behind the steering wheel. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are integrated as standard.
Lotus retailers globally are now taking orders for the 2022 Emira, and first customers will take delivery early next year. Prices start at €72,000 (P 4.23 million) in the U.K.
