Last Hurrah: Honda Reveals 600-Horspower NSX Type S

Honda is saying goodbye to the second-generation NSX in style by launching a limited-run Type S version of their supercar.

Only 350 of the NSX Type S will be built and all of them carry a 600 horsepower (up 27 horsepower) electrified twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. The increased horsepower and torque (667 Nm) of the hand-built engine is down to new fuel injectors, intercoolers, and turbochargers with increased peak pressure. Meanwhile, on the electric end, a tweaked Intelligent Power Unit allows for a 20 percent higher usable battery capacity and 10 percent greater battery output.

Together with increased front and rear tracks, sticky Pirelli PZero tires, and improvements to its torque-vectoring Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system means the NSX Type S is around two seconds faster around the Suzuka Circuit in Japan compared to the regular NSX.

Apart from extensive work underneath the car, Honda has also improved the NSX Type S’s aerodynamics with a new nose, more angular air intakes, and larger air diffuser. These don’t just minimize lift, but also improve cooling as well.

While a carbon fiber roof is standard, for even increased levels of performance, the NSX Type S is also made available with a Lightweight Package which adds a high-gloss carbon fiber engine cover and carbon ceramic brakes as well. Inside, the Lightweight Package includes carbon fiber accents on the steering wheel and carbon fiber meter hood. Put together, the Lightweight Package reduces curb weight by 26.2 kilograms.

The NSX Type S also debuts the first-ever factory matte paint finish for Honda. The color, Gotham Gray makes up 70 of the 350-unit NSX Type S production run.

The second-generation Honda NSX may be ending its production run, but the Japanese carmaker says they are “already investigating what the next-generation of sports cars should be in the coming electrified era”; a hint, perhaps, that they’re not finished with the NSX story just yet.
