Toyota Cutting Japan Production By 40 Percent In September

In what could be the clearest sign of how one region can affect a global supply chain, Toyota Motor Corporation is halting production at 27 out of its 28 lines due to a parts shortage brought on by the spread of COVID-19.

Together with the ongoing global semiconductor shortage, Toyota will have to cut its August to September 2021 production by 40 percent.

This is the second widespread production shortage at Toyota in Japan in the past two months. The first one was announced last July and affected production of the Alphard and Land Cruiser 300.

This time around, models affected by the production halt are the GR Yaris, Land Cruiser 300, Alphard, Hiace, RAV4, and all Lexus models. In fact, Toyota will halt the production of its Century and Lexus LC altogether in September.

Toyota Motor Corporation did not give details as to whether this production stoppage will affect vehicle supply to markets such as the Philippines.

It must be remembered that the carmaker just started turning over units of the GR Yaris to waiting customers, while the Land Cruiser 300 is expected to launch in the coming months. Reports are coming in that interest for the Land Cruiser 300 is so high, some dealers are requiring deposits of up to P 500,000 (the normal going rate is P 100,000). Some are also requiring purchases be done through in-house financing.
