Toyota Launches A Convincing 2022 Hilux GR Sport 4WD

Toyota should consider performing vasectomy as they announce the newest addition to its ever-growing Gazoo Racing family: the 2022 Toyota Hilux GR Sport. Still, at least it is a decent effort this time around.

While this might not be the first time Toyota has come up with a hotted-up Hilux, this is the first time they’re making it available in the ASEAN market.

Just launched in Thailand, the Hilux GR Sport is based off the Hilux Revo—which is basically the double-cab, high-stance model of the Hilux . Inspired by their WRC cars, the Hilux GR Sport has a unique front grille with the words, “TOYOTA” spelt out (it also incorporates the GR emblems, of course). It also has metallic (aka high-gloss) black fender flare accents, side mirrors, and rear bumpers. It also has—like any sporty car—a sharks fin antenna.

Thankfully, the Hilux GR Sport isn’t all show and no go. Engineers actually did some stuff this time around. For starters, the 18-inch wheels show off the ventilated front disc brake with red calipers. It also has better handling thanks to monotube shock absorbers for both front and rear.

Under the hood, however, the 2.8-liter 4-cylinder remains the same. That means it’s good for 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. The sole gearbox is a 6-speed automatic with both sequential and paddle shifters.

Inside, the Hilux GR Sport features a “sportscar-like experience” with its perforated suede and leather combination seats, smoked silver and metallic black accents, aluminum pedals, and of course, a sports style steering wheel. The Gazoo Racing branding is found also on the push-start button and gauge start-up sequence.

The Hilux GR Sport also ups the safety with standard Toyota Safety Sense. This gives this version of the Hilux functions such as pre-collision braking, lane departure alert, dynamic radar cruise control, blind spot indicators, and rear cross traffic alert. It also gets a 360-degree around view monitor too.

The 2022 Hilux GR Sport starts sales in Thailand with a suggested retail price of THB 1.299 million (P 1.978 million). Toyota Motor Philippines has not officially announced this sporty variant of the Hilux, but given the popularity of lifestyle-oriented pickup trucks in the Philippines, it is very likely that we’ll see the Hilux GR Sport very soon.
