Ford Reveals 2022 Expedition, Updated With New Tech, Hands-Free Driving

Ford is giving their flagship SUV, the Expedition a big update for 2022. It is, according to the carmaker, a response to meet the needs of modern families, particularly millennials who make up the fastest growing demographic in the full-sized SUV segment.

The changes outside are mostly limited to the front where the Expedition gets refreshed LED headlights, LED fog lights, and grille for 2022. The big news though is what you see inside. Some components are carried over, but most is new. The driver has a 12.4-inch digital gauge cluster, while at the center is a new infotainment system that starts at 12 inches (SYNC 4) and grows to 15.5 inches (SYNC 4A). Both versions are upgradable thanks to OTA updates. There’s also a rear seat entertainment system with 16 GB of storage as well as a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen speaker system.

The 2022 Expedition also adds a myriad of driver assist technology as standard such as Road Edge Detection, Intersection Assist, Reverse Brake Assist, and Evasive Steering Assist. Opting for the Ford BlueCruise even unlocks hands-free adaptive cruise control.

Underneath, the Expedition keeps the services of its boosted 3.5-liter V6. In its low output version, it makes 375 horsepower and 637 Nm of torque, but going for the high-output version gives you 440 horsepower and 691 Nm of torque—more than either the Chevrolet Tahoe or Jeep Wagoneer reminds Ford. Both engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic.

In order to quench the V6’s thirst, Ford has also deployed an active air dam system which deploys at speeds greater than 40 mph (63 km/h). According to the carmaker, this should improve its fuel efficiency by 4 percent.

New also for 2022 is the introduction of a rugged Timberline trim (see bottom photos). Raising its ground clearance to 10.6 inches (around 270 mm), it not only has the best ground clearance among full-sized SUVs, but it vastly improves both its approach and departure angles. It also benefits from Ford’s recent off-road tech such as Trail Turn Assist which can tighten its turning radius on hairpin trail turns, a two-speed transfer case, and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler AT tires fitted onto 18-inch rims. It also gets the F-150 Raptor’s underbody shielding.

Ford says the 2022 Expedition will go on sale in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2022.
