Jeep is continuing its push towards electrification with the first-ever plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee. Building on its legacy as one of the most awarded SUVs ever, the all-new 2022 version brings not just a new fuel-efficient powertrain, but an all-new exterior design as well as an uplifted interior.
Starting with what’s under the hood, the Grand Cherokee is now available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain with 40 kilometers of all-electric range. The turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder combined with a pair of electric motors makes 375 horsepower and 637 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic with 4x4 systems. The high-voltage electronics are also sealed and water-proofed giving it a maximum water wading depth of 610 mm.
If PHEVs don’t do it for you, the Grand Cherokee is also available with conventional engines such as the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 (293 horsepower). There’s also a 5.7-liter V8 (357 horsepower) available, and it’s with this engine that towing capacity goes up to 3,265 kilograms.
Built on an all-new platform, the unibody Grand Cherokee certainly lives up to the Jeep name with advanced 4x4 systems including an air suspension setup. Driver selectable modes (Selec-Terrain) optimizes the performance of the all-wheel drive for on- and off-road driving. New for 2022 is a front-axle disconnect. If the vehicle senses that road conditions don’t require all-wheel drive, it automatically places the SUV to two-wheel drive mode further improving fuel efficiency.
Inside, the Grand Cherokee features a 10.1-inch digital driver’s display and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. There’s also a rear entertainment system with Amazon’s FireTV system built in. Audiophiles will be impressed by a 19-speaker McIntosh sound system. Other features include 16-way power adjustable front seats, heated/ventilated seats for the first two rows, and massagers for the front passengers.
Jeep says the all-new 2022 Grand Cherokee will arrive in U.S. showrooms by the end of this year, while global markets will start getting them by early 2022.
