The implementation of stricter community quarantine restrictions last August halted the Philippine auto industry’s recovery with the combined Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) report saying that new vehicle sales declined 11.5 percent year-on-year, and 26.3 percent month-on-month in August.
The joint CAMPI-TMA report revealed that new vehicle sales reached 15,847 units in August, lower than the 17,906 units sold in August last year and 21,498 units sold in July this year.
But the year to date automotive sales registered a hefty 37.8 percent increase to 170,112 units from 123,489 units in the same period January to August period last year.
CAMPI and TMA are still targeting to hit 295,400 unit sales this year, or 20.9 percent higher than 2020 figures.
Passenger Car (PC) sales declined 10.3 percent to 4,894 units in August from 5,454 units in the same month a year ago, while Commercial Vehicle (CV) sales dropped 12 percent to 10,953 units in August compared to August 2020’s 12,452 units.
In terms of brands, Toyota Motor Philippines remains the the top-selling selling 82,389 units (48.43 percent) followed by Mitsubishi Motor Philippines in second with 23,912 units (14.06 percent), Suzuki in third with 12,954 units (7.61 percent), Ford in fourth with 12,921 units (7 percent), and Nissan in fifth with 11,498 units (6.76 percent).
As the “Ber” months roll in, CAMPI still predicts tough times ahead as “spending on big ticket times such as cars” remain a challenge due to the economic slowdown, and lowered business and consumer confidence.
In addition, carmakers could be affected by supply issues as well as global production has been hampered by not just by the shortage of semiconductors but of other parts as well.
