Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Lexus Models Now Affected By Production Stoppage

If you’re hoping to skip the queues on the Land Cruiser 300 by going with the Land Cruiser Prado, well, think again. It looks like that mid-sized SUV will also be affected by a supply shortage as well.

Toyota is making production volume adjustments in the area of around 170,000 units—40,000 units at global plants and 30,000 in Japan for September, and 330,000 units (180,000 units at global plants and 150,000 in Japan) in October due to part constraints.

In a statement, Toyota says that the spread of COVID-19 in Southeast Asia has ravaged its suppliers based in Malaysia (semiconductor chips) and Vietnam (wiring harnesses). While Toyota is scrambling to shift suppliers, the “perfect storm” is resulting in a shortage of parts requiring the production schedule adjustments.

Toyota has yet to issue which models are affected in October, but for September, it will stop 10 production lines at 9 plants out of their total of 28 lines at 14 plants.

Among the models affected by the production stoppage include:
  • Lexus ES
  • Lexus GX
  • Lexus NX
  • Lexus RX
  • Lexus UX
  • Toyota FJ Cruiser
  • Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

The production stoppage will also affect Toyota’s overall global volume for the current fiscal year. From an expected 9.3-million-unit production forecast, the automaker is downgrading it to 9 million units as “outlook for November and beyond is unclear, while demand remains very strong.”
