We can’t wait to get our hands on the all-new Honda Civic. And with a drive scheduled sometime in 2022 (blame COVID-19), we’ll have to wait at least two months before we get enough seat time even for a first impression (again, driving around the block doesn’t count in my book).
But we did spend a couple of hours with the 11th generation compact sedan for pictorials and a short video shoot. In that short period of time, we did uncover one of many interesting new features of the all-new Civic.
Things like the turbocharged engine, Honda SENSING, and Bose sound system (on the Civic RS, at least) are surely the main highlights, but Honda did weave their magic even in some small details.
Take for example, the trunk.
At first glance, the 2022 Civic’s trunk seems ordinary enough. Sure, the lid’s nicely lined, it’s got a lever to drop the seats (in a 60/40-fold if I may add) from the back, and the Civic RS’s trunk supports are covered in plastic; but what else can you do with a part of the car designed to store crap in?
Well, how about adding an automatic opening rear trunk lid too?
Before you get too excited, don’t expect the same motorized mumbo-jumbo from the Germans. Honda, has opted for a simpler and far more mechanical solution that pretty much the same thing.
Pressing the trunk lid open (the actuator’s electric, as is the gas tank), and a small gas strut on the side works in tandem with the traditional torsion spring to lift the entire trunk up. This ingenious, albeit simple solution is very helpful, especially if you happen to have your hands full of groceries and stuff.
Now, for those who noticed the official spec sheet, they would have noticed a discrepancy in cargo capacity between the different Civic variants. Both the Civic S and V variants lists the maximum cargo volume to be 497 liters, while the Civic RS reduces it down to 495 liters.
I asked this question to John Paul Chua of Honda Cars Philippines’ product planning team. He revealed that the reason for the Civic RS’s slightly smaller trunk space is down to the clearance of the rear sub-woofer which is mounted on the rear shelf. Because of the small protrusion (it’s barely visible), Honda deemed it to reduce the cargo capacity by two liters.
As we spend more time with the all-new Civic, more and more nifty details or Easter Eggs will surely pop up. And of course, we can’t wait to drive the darn thing soon.
