The 2022 Mazda CX-50 Embraces The Great Outdoors

Mazda has unveiled the first of its five all-new SUVs slated to arrive in the next two years—the first-ever CX-50. Designed to meet the requirements of the North American market, the CX-50 is slated to slot above the CX-5 in terms of performance and size (and likely, pricing).

Part of the Small Product group with the Mazda3 and CX-30, the CX-50 is equipped with standard all-wheel drive and Mazda Intelligent Drive Select or Mi-Drive with an exclusive Off-Road and Tow mode. In Off-Road mode, the G-Vectoring system is more aggressive, cutting engine torque on turn in to shift weight to the front wheels for more grip. It also more fully engages the all-wheel drive to help keep wheels turning at the same rate for stability. On hills, hill-holding comes into play, the idle is raised for smoothly transitioning to throttle, and the torque converter doesn’t lock up as soon to help the car ease over objects.

At launch, it will receive a choice between a normally-aspirated 190-horsepower 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G or a turbocharged 250-horsepower 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G. Both are paired with 6-speed automatics. Later on, it will be joined by electrified powertrains such as a traditional hybrid.

The CX-50 takes Mazda’s Kodo design language and interprets it for the rugged outdoors. The sleek, long silhouette and wide stance help give it more dynamic proportions. It also debuts the brand’s first-ever panoramic sunroof, while in terms of colors, it gains Zircon Sand as a choice. The design is also functional with the B-pillars and door jambs reinforced enabling it to secure heavier loads on the high-strength roof rails. The rear doors also open close to 90 degrees for easy ingress and egress.

Speaking about the interior, the five-seater CX-50 continues with a familiar cabin layout with its minimalist look with hidden vents and a large floating infotainment screen. There are new touches here though such as the vertical air vents around the instrument cluster, a squarer overall shape, and the availability of a new color: Terracotta.

Currently, the CX-50 is a North American exclusive where production will begin in January 2022 at the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing (MTM) plant in Alabama. With that, the chances of the CX-50 arriving to the Philippines are slim. Don’t fret, however, because Europe, Japan, and the rest of the world, presumably including us, will get the upcoming CX-60 instead.

  1. Uly, this is based on an enlarged CX-30 platform rather than the CX-5 one right? AWD is standard regardless if the engine is NA or FI.

    1. Correct. It's part of Mazda's Small Product group so its platform is shared with CX-30 and Mazda3. AWD is standard regardless of engine.

    1. You pay nothing in terms of PMS for the first 5 years of Mazda ownership. This is because they offer that 5-year free service plan.

As for after that five years, I've heard some conflicting stories. Some say, it's about the same level as Honda, while some say it's in the same range as Subaru.

Regardless, don't get yourself in a collision. Those collision parts--headlights, wheels, etc...are pretty expensive. Plus special colors like Soul Red and Machine Gray are hard to replicate properly by third-party paint shops.
