The move towards electrification is spooking car makers out of the micro hatchback category, but Toyota believes that there’s life in that segment yet. Case in point is their Aygo A-segment hatchback which gains crossover-like styling and a slightly brand-new name: the 2022 Aygo X.
Riding on Toyota’s GA-B platform, the Aygo X is designed primarily to tackle Europe’s tight and narrow streets. The front overhang is some 72 mm less than the Euro market Yaris, while its turning radius is kept at a compact 4.7-meters. Yet, the Aygo X is longer (3,700 mm) and wider (1,740 mm) compared to its predecessor. The crossover styling (it rides on wheels up to 18 inches in diameter) allows for a raised seating position along with higher ride height.
Powering the Aygo X is a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder engine good for 72 horsepower and 93 Nm of torque. Two gearboxes are on offer with a 5-speed manual being the base and a S-CVT being available for those who prefer a two-pedal setup. Toyota says 0 to 100 km/h takes about 15.5 seconds. Meanwhile, the TNGA platform allows for improved roll stiffness, exceptional ride comfort and control.
Toyota calls the Aygo X’s design emotional. The final verdict is still out, but it is a head-turner with its large tire-to-body ratio, two-tone color motif, and eye-catching colors including Chili. LED lighting is available together with a segment-unique canvas top.
Inside, Toyota promises a quieter experience (one of the best in its segment they say) and premium materials. It also has a JBL 4-speaker system with a 300-watt amplifier and a 200-mm subwoofer located in the trunk.
The Aygo X also takes a big step forward in terms of safety, introducing Toyota Safety Sense as standard for the first time on a A-segment model. The latest Toyota Safety Sense employs a combination of monocular camera sensor and millimeter-wave radar, Pre-Collision System (PCS) with vehicle detection is now operates at higher speeds. Debuting on the Aygo X are day and night Pedestrian Detection, daytime Cyclist Detection, Collision Mitigation Support, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Trace Assist and Emergency Steering Assist.
The Toyota Aygo X remains a Europe exclusive where it will debut there in 2022.

ReplyDeleteThis will not be a hit in the Philippine market especially if it's price is close to that of the City, Vios, or Mirage. The Yaris Cross would be a better car to bring over here.

ReplyDeleteI hope they can bring the Aygo to Manila and market it as an option vs motorbikes and scooters. Most people drive around Metro Manila alone.
