Kia is dusting off the Carens nameplate for this all-new three-row global SUV which brings sophistication of a family mover and the sportiness of an SUV in one compelling package.
The 2022 Carens measures at 4,540 mm which is about 200 mm shorter than the Innova, however, makes up for it with its generous width (1,800 mm) and ultra-long wheelbase (at 2,780 mm, it’s even longer than Toyota’s MPV).
The exterior brings Kia’s Opposites United design philosophy. At the front is the carmaker’s new lighting concept—The Star Map—while the horizontal garnish in the upper grille and frame-type chrome garnish in the lower bumper create the tiger face. The two-tone side molding, chrome rear bumper garnish with diamond knurling pattern, high-gloss black skid plate, and 16-inch alloy wheels gives it an SUV-like design.
Inside, the Carens features soothing colors, plenty of storage space, and a layout designed to put the occupants at ease. The dashboard has a wide high-gloss black panel that accentuates the overall design, while the door trims look stylish and are uniquely designed for offering storage space. Inspired by airplane seats, all three-seat rows combine comfort with aesthetics by matching materials, patterns, and colors in an elegant manner. The center switches are uniquely designed so that they highlight the features it offers.
Features include a built-in air purifier, ambient mood lighting with 64 colors, a 10.25-inch infotainment system with an 8-speaker Bose sound system, ventilated front seats, roof-mounted AC vents, a one-touch easy-tumble 2nd row, and a large sunroof.
Riding on a stretched Seltos platform, the Carens is available with two gasoline and one diesel engine choices. The gasoline is a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder making 115 horsepower and 144 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, a turbocharged 1.4-liter brings the maximum power up to 140 horsepower and 242 Nm. A 1.5-liter diesel develops a healthy 115 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. The gasoline-engine versions will be available in either 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual clutch flavors, while the diesel gets a torque converter 6-speed ‘box.
Packaged as a family car, the Carens packs top-class safety with 6 SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control, and all-wheel disc brakes as standard. On the top-trim models, it adds front parking sensors, tire pressure monitoring, and even rain-sensing wipers.
The Carens will go on sale in India, where it’s made, in the first quarter of 2022. Global markets will follow soon thereafter.
