After its debut for the Taiwan market last September, Toyota’s Gazoo-fied Corolla Cross makes its way to ASEAN courtesy of Thailand.
Unveiled in the land of smiles, the Corolla Cross GR Sport, like the Taiwanese version, adopts a new front face with a mesh grille. It also adds satin-painted overrider style elements to the front, side, and rear as well as a black roof, side mirrors, and taillamps. The Thailand version though gets exclusive Gazoo Racing two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/50R18 tires.
Like the Hilux GR Sport and Fortuner GR Sport, the Corolla Cross GR Sport benefits from a revised suspension system. New springs and shock absorbers give it less body roll and improve handling. A lower strut bar also adds to the overall rigidity. Finally, the electric power steering (EPS) system has been recalibrated.
Engine-wise though, Toyota’s left the Corolla Cross GR Sport pretty much alone. Unlike the Taiwan version, it’s only available with hybrid power in Thailand. With that, it pairs a 98 horsepower, 142 Nm of torque 1.8-liter with a 72 horsepower, 163 Nm of torque electric motor. The combined peak output is rated at 122 horsepower.
Inside, the Corolla Cross GR Sport gets sporty front seats embossed with the Gazoo Racing logo as well as the GR logo on the push-start button and infotainment startup sequence, and piano black elements.
Along with the introduction of the GR Sport variant, Toyota also updated the rest of the Corolla Cross range. Versions equipped with Toyota Safety Sense now has All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Lane Tracing Assist.
PH should use this opportunity to re-launch the Corolla Cross. Offer GR sport, Hybrid and a V version (no one wants the base G). Try to win back the sub-compact buyers from the Chinese brands.
