Despite being known for more sensible cars, Toyota won’t be forgetting their aim of making “ever better cars.” To that end, they’re set to bring out two high-performance vehicles at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon.
The first is the Toyota GR GT3 Concept (see lead photo). Toyota says the GR GT3 Concept is a “racing-dedicated concept car that incorporates the knowledge and refined technologies Toyota Gazoo Racing gained in the field of motorsports.”
Based on the silhouette, it doesn’t look related to the GR Supra. Instead, it seems to be an original Toyota design. It sports fender vents and a large wing at the back.
Joining the GR GT3 is a more hardcore version of the GR Yaris. Officially, Toyota hasn’t said much about this hotted up version of its WRC-inspired hot hatch. However, rumors say it’s set to take on the GR Yaris GRMN badge (GRMN means Gazoo Racing Made for the Nurburging).
Reports say it will pack the same 1.6-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder but tuned to deliver 20 Nm more torque (390 NM versus 370 Nm). While it doesn’t have much more horses under the hood, it will receive a revised gearbox, reinforced clutch, and mechanical limited slip differentials. It’s said to be 10 mm wider and will sit 10 mm lower than the GR Yaris.
The GR Yaris GRMN will also feature 545 more spot welding points for increased rigidity, but thanks to the deletion of the rear seats and the extensive use of carbon fiber bits, curb weight will drop by around 30 kilograms.
