Electronics giant Sony is exploring the possibilities of entering the EV space, and to do that, they’re creating a new company called Sony Mobility. This new entity will explore the viability of entering the production EV space, something Sony dismissed merely as a technological showcase in the past.
At the Consumer Electronics Show, Sony showed off the Vision-S 02, a 7-seater battery electric SUV with twin electric motors. The combined 536 horsepower output is impressive to say the least, while handling is assured thanks to its all-around double wishbones and air suspension.
More than just the mechanical details though, the Vision-S 02 continues being Sony’s technology showcase and this is seen in its full width panoramic display. Spanning a total of five screens, it has built-in speakers in the seats (360 Reality Audio) and access to several online services including movie streaming and even Playstation’s Remote Play.
The Vision-S 02 also has interior facing cameras enabling facial recognition and passenger monitoring. It also has gesture and voice controls as well. The speakers can also play engine sounds if the driver so wishes.
Additionally, a 5G connection enables vehicle settings, key locks, and user settings to be copied via the cloud to a smartphone app, as well as over-the-air updates to improve functionality. The high-speed, high-capacity, and low-latency data network also enables true remote operation as part of efforts to introduce autonomous driving capabilities—something Sony has already tested in the past.
