BYD To Use NVIDIA For Self-Driving Tech

BYD, the world’s second-largest electric vehicle maker, announced that it’s building its next-generation vehicles using the NVIDIA Drive Hyperion architecture. This platform, based on Drive Orin, is now in production, and is powering at least 25 EV makers building software-defined vehicles on high-performance, energy-efficient computing technology.

The first BYD vehicle to use the NVIDIA architecture is a production vehicle due in late 2023 based off the Ocean-X Concept Car which was shown late last year.

The Ocean-X rides on BYD’s e-platform 3.0 which aims to lead electric vehicles particularly in safety and low-temperature driving range. The new architecture is also destined to result in safer, more efficient EVs particularly when it comes to packaging. BYD says it fully integrates the proprietary blade batteries into the car body.

The e-platform 3.0 enables ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometers and a fast-charging technology that boosts range of up to 150 kilometers after just five minutes. It also has improved direct cooling which improves their thermal efficiency by up to 20 percent while reducing energy loss. Performance-wise, the all-wheel drive system will enable a 0 to 100 km/h time of 2.9 seconds.

With the announcement that the Drive Hyperion platform will be used by BYD, it will accelerate the Chinese carmaker’s autonomous driving development.

The NVIDIA Drive Orin system-on-a-chip achieves up to 254 trillion of operations per second (TOPS) and is designed to handle the large number of applications and deep neural networks (DNNs) that run simultaneously in autonomous vehicles. It will act as the nervous system and brain of the vehicle, processing massive amounts of sensor data in real time to safely perceive, plan, and act.
