Mitsubishi Motors Philippines has sprung a surprise by opening the reservation books for the refreshed 2022 Xpander just four months after its global debut last November. The country’s best-selling MPV, which has cornered 54.4 percent of the market since its introduction in 2018, is now more advanced, progressive, and aggressive.
In terms of styling, the 2022 Xpander takes on the latest Dynamic Shield face which, taken with the three-dimensional skid guard, visually makes this one aggressive looking MPV. The changes are capped by a new horizontal front bumper design and T-shaped headlights with LED lighting. Over to the side, standard 17-inch alloy wheels fill in the wheel wells, while the larger, more aerodynamic side sills give it a more sculpted feel. At the back, the rear bumper has been reshaped, and the same T-shaped pattern is found in the rear LED lights. Capping off the changes is a lengthened body and increased ground clearance.
Changes to the Xpander aren’t just limited to what you see. The larger wheels serve as a teaser to the amount of work Mitsubishi engineers did underneath. The rigidity of the front strut mounting part has been improved, while the cylinder size of the rear shock absorber has been expanded. At both ends, they adopt new high-performance valves. In short, expect a flatter and more comfortable ride.
Another new change is the adoption of an electric parking brake or EPB. Together with a new auto hold function, it reduces the burden on drivers in stop-and-go traffic, further enhancing comfort.
Under the hood, Xpander keeps the same 1.5-liter MIVEC 4-cylinder engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. All in all, it makes 104 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque.
Inside, Mitsubishi’s new “Horizontal Axis” dashboard layout gives it a robust, SUV-like feel. Soft pads with synthetic leather and real stitching are used on the instrument panel and door trims add a more premium feel. Meanwhile, for the driver, the steering wheel is new with an optimized grip size and shape for easier driving. The instrument cluster has also been revised with new graphics for better legibility.
For added comfort and convenience, the new Xpander gets digital A/C controls. The LCD panel makes it easier for drivers and passengers to check the fan and temperature settings. Further enhancing comfort, it gets cruise control, a 7-inch Display Audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB ports—both Type A and Type C located at the rear console, and power outlets across all three rows to keep devices juiced up on long road trips. It's also filled with nifty storage solutions like the front under seat tray, compartmentalized seatback pockets, and even second row cup holders located in the center arm rest.
As the preferred MPV for Filipino families, safety is always at the forefront of Mitsubishi’s mind when it comes to the 2022 Xpander. Aside from the usual set of airbags and ABS with EBD, it also comes standard with a rear-view camera, while Active Stability Control with Traction Control and Hill Start Assist is reserved for the top-of-the-line GLS.
The 2022 Xpander comes in three variants: the GLX 1.5 MT, GLX 1.5 AT, and the GLS 1.5 AT.
Color availability is depending on the variant:
- GLX 1.5 MT / 1.5 AT – Jet Black Mica, Graphite Gray Metallic, Blade Silver Metallic (new for 2022)
- GLS 1.5 AT – Graphite Gray Metallic, Blade Silver Metallic (new for 2022), Quartz White Pearl, Red Metallic
- GLX 1.5 MT – P 1,030,000
- GLX 1.5 AT – P 1,090,000
- GLS 1.5 AT – P 1,160,000

“These were part of the inspiration for the newest Xpander, which will actually be already offered in advance to our Filipino customers. But it doesn’t just end there, we also have a special pre-selling treat in store before the month ends.”
Customer deliveries will commence in May.

ReplyDeleteThe Xpander is a very great car, has a conventional 4AT and MIVEC engine, but the newly-launched Geely Emgrand (yes, only NA engine, and yes, it's not a Mistubishi) is still a compelling buy. Built on the same platform as the splendid Coolray, plus luxury cabin materials and tech at a very affordable price, the Emgrand challenges both MPVs & subcompact crossovers. Good job Geely.
