Foton Philippines To Launch 2022 Thunder At MIAS

It looks like Foton Motor Philippines won’t be giving up in the pickup truck segment just yet. Confirmed on their social media pages, the pioneering Chinese commercial vehicle brand looks to be launching the all-new 2022 Thunder at the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) in April.

Known as the Tuland G7 elsewhere, the 2022 Foton will feature a new front clip with the words, “FOTON” spelled out on the new matte black grille echoed at the back as part of a new matte black tailgate garnish. “Bionic” headlights offer up to 20 percent better nighttime visibility, supported by front and rear fog lamps. C-shaped LED daytime running lights surrounding the front fog lamps, body-colored bumpers, and 18-inch wheels complete the exterior features.

Inside, the 2022 Thunder is expected to gain a modernized cockpit fitted with more leather (up to 80 percent per Foton’s estimates). A floating infotainment screen dominates the dashboard, while possible features include a push-start engine and power adjustable driver’s seat.

With a teaser caption that reads, “A new power is on the move” it could signify a new powertrain for the Philippine Thunder. Globally, the Tunland G7 is only available with one powertrain. Surprisingly, it drops the Cummins engine for a 2.0-liter Aucan (4F20TC5) turbo diesel producing 160 horsepower and 390 Nm of torque. The only gearbox option is a 6-speed manual. It remains to be seen if Foton Philippines will opt to keep the Cummins ISF and 6-speed automatic combo.

Are you excited for the brand-new Foton Thunder, or should they just stick to trucks from now on?

  1. I think this is the only pickup truck that is locally manufactured. Hope more Filipinos will support the Thunder and the Toplander (SUV).
