Gachaco, A Battery Swapping Service For Electric Motorcycles Will Start In Japan

After announcing it last year, a consortium of Japanese motorcycle brands composed of Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha is ready to start their battery swapping service within this year.

In a lead up towards that, together with energy company Eneos, they have established Gachaco. Gachaco will start its formal operations on April 1 and will provide sharing service of standardized swappable batteries for electric motorcycles by the third quarter of this year.

Gachaco is scheduled to launch the battery sharing service using Honda’s Mobile Power Pack e: which meets the common standards for electric motorcycles. It will start first in Tokyo, and will expand to other major cities in Japan. Battery Exchange stations will be located at places such as railway stations and at Eneos service stations.

In the future, besides electric motorcycles, Gachaco will promote the use of standardized swappable batteries for other applications, such as storage batteries installed at commercial facilities and private homes.

In addition, expended batteries that are generated by the sharing service provided by Gachaco will be collected and will be reviewed for possible secondary and tertiary use before finally being recycled.
