Geely Makes A Rival To The Honda Civic With The 181-Horsepower 2022 Binrui Cool

Could Geely Philippines be adding a third model based on its BMA platform? After wowing the local market with the Coolray and Emgrand, they could stir up the compact sedan segment with this: the Binrui Cool.

The big news for Geely’s C-segment offering is that it shares the very same powertrain as the revamped Coolray. With that, it gets a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 181 horsepower and 235 Nm of torque driving the front wheels via a wet-type 7-speed dual clutch automatic. With those power outputs, it easily matches the 11th generation Civic. And get this, the price starts at just RMB 79,800 (P 658,200)!

At a glance, the Binrui Cool looks very close to the Emgrand down to elements such as the triple-dash LED DRLs. However, it does don a new design philosophy which Geely calls, “Racing Storm.” The Binrui Cool features yellow-painted brake calipers and black 17-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the Binrui Cool gets a dual digital gauge cluster with a 10.25-inch screen for the driver and a 12.3-inch serving as the interface for the infotainment system. The same minimalistic design found in the Coolray and Emgrand are also present here, but setting this sporty sedan apart would be its sport seats with suede and polyurethane material.

Granted the compact sedan or C-segment is now pretty much niche, the chances of seeing the Binrui Cool here are pretty slim. That said, if Geely Philippines wants to make a statement, they could certainly do it with this.

  1. Honda Civic vs Geely Binrui Cool (w Volvo technology)

    1. sure, volvo might be the pioneer of a lot of tech but they haven't been exactly reliable in the past decades

    2. ^As a Volvo owner I second this. They don't build cars like they used to. Volvo focused too much on safety and tech, they practically forgot about reliability. Perhaps it's due to being owned by Ford, then Geely, Volvo's glory days were prior to the Ford acquisition, when they were still independent. Don't get me started on the lack of spare parts available locally, even the Germans have them beat there. Eastwood VIP Parking is nice, though I was only able to use it once as I tend to use my other cars more.

  2. Skip this and just bring the Preface which is based on the newer CMA (more proper for a compact sedan). Bigger and with more powerful 2.0T engine

    1. RG, is this a better competitor to the Civic?

    2. THIS! The market of Corolla Altis and Civics are already dwindling due to massive preference to crossovers and SUVs.

If Geely wants to make a statement and have a premium halo car/flagship car, this better be it. And please, for Christ's sake: put Apple Carplay or Android Auto!

    3. The thing here is the price. The Binrui, since it has a 1.5 liter engine has a much lower tariff and probably could retail at around the same price as the Coolray or even lower. Who wouldn't want a totl Binrui with the same price as the base model Civic. If they bring the Preface, the price could probably go over $1.5M and because this is now a niche market, it wouldn't make any sense for them business-wise.

    4. A yes. The China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement only includes 1.5 engines or lower.

    5. Preface is currently Geely's flagship sedan. Definitely a better competitor to Civic.

Valid points on potential pricing since it has bigger engine - which brings to the other commenter's point - Preface (TOTL) can be Geely Ph's halo car as they focus more on their volume sellers.

Funny a halo car may cost cheaper than a Jap compact sedan 😅

  3. Since the Civic was mentioned, is the Corolla Altis still a proper competitor to the Honda sedan? Based on reviews I read/watched, the Mazda 3 is more frequently mentioned as a rival.

  4. Segment-wise yes, but engine-wise, the Altis is behind the Civic and Mazda 3 when it comes to sporty compacts.

  5. Slowly but Surely Geely Philippines will bring all of it's Hi Performance Vehicles that can match the Japanese Carmakers competition.

  6. This would be "cool" if Geely brings thi here, will be imoressive..however this likely will compete its very own recently launced Emgrand.. I think it is more logical to bring the Preface to compete the Accords, Camrys, and 6s.. Or better yet bring the Xingyue L to shock pinoys how advance car tech in China is and at a very competetive price too..

  7. If they could price it that low, why not. It could be the disposable cheap but decently fast car you're looking for.

    1. ASIMO is the one who is disposable.
      And cheap.
      And definitely not decent.

    2. Exactly. These affordable Chinese cars are beginning to feel like nice shiny toys you can collect or replace every 4 years. Not a bad thing as long as there's no corner-cutting in the safety department.

These also make good choices for corporate fleets. What you lose in subsequent resale value you already saved upfront.

    3. agree. just treat geely like a smartphone. 4 to 5 years it will become trash and just dispose it. or sell it to a poor soul who does not have a hint of clue about cars
