Japanese Carmakers Come To Ukraine's Aid


At least three Japanese carmakers are helping Ukraine through their respective humanitarian efforts. Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Mazda have all come forward with direct support to affected employees and their families, or through corporate donations.

With more than 1,700 Ukrainian employees working at their European entities, Toyota employees, with company support, set up transportation, shelter, and access to medical services, as well as administrative support to families forced to flee Ukraine. Furthermore, a Toyota Humanitarian Aid Fund was established to provide relocation support, including accommodation and meals, to affected employees and their families.

In addition, Toyota will donate 500,000 euros to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and will quadruple monetary donations made by employees with a maximum of two million euros.

Meanwhile, Nissan is creating a 2.5-million-euro fund with one million euros going to the Red Cross and other non-profit organizations to support ongoing emergency activities. The remaining 1.5 million euros will be set aside to help affected employees and families and these include relocation expenses, living expenses for displaced families, and medical expenses. Where it can help, the company is also prepared to donate vehicles.

Honda will donate 1 million euro to the Japanese Red Cross Society as humanitarian support for the many people in Ukraine and neighboring areas who are facing extraordinary difficulties.

Finally, Mazda is making a 1 million euros donation to the UNHCR. Moreover, employees are also collecting and distributing donations through their own grassroots activities.

Both Toyota and Nissan have suspended the export of vehicles to Russia.
