Toyota Teases Subaru WRX-Rivaling GR Corolla

Toyota is bringing forth another new GR model, and this time, they’re setting their sights squarely on the Subaru WRX with the first-ever GR Corolla.

Destined for a global debut on April 1 Philippine time, the Japanese carmaker has started its official tease with these two photos—one showing its fender vent and another showing the “GR-Four” badge which looks to occupy the aggressive side sill spoiler.

Officially, Toyota has kept mum on the GR Corolla’s details, but it is expected to use the GR Yaris’s turbocharged 1.6-liter 3-cylinder engine and with that should make around 261 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque. A 6-speed manual is a given, but rumors abound that it’ll also come with an automatic gearbox of some kind (likely an 8-speed torque converter).

It will also benefit from the WRC-developed GR-Four all-wheel drive system and it is possible that the GR Corolla will also have optional Torsen limited slip differentials fitted to both its front and rear axles.

For now, the GR Corolla is confirmed for the North American market where the GR Yaris isn’t for sale. However, there’s still a possibility (fingers crossed) that Toyota will offer their new hot hatch to global markets as well.
