The death of the Toyota Crown, it seems, is greatly exaggerated as Toyota’s luxury flagship is actually set for a big global comeback in 2023.
However, don’t expect the Crown nameplate to just adorn a luxury sedan. Instead, Reuters say Toyota will be using the nearly 70-year-old nameplate to adorn a new flagship SUV that will slot atop the Sequoia and the Land Cruiser.
Unnamed sources within the Japanese automaker says the Crown revival will form part of Toyota’s electrification push. Sales of the hybrid SUV will begin in the middle of 2023 with China, Japan, and North America named as its primary markets. A plug-in hybrid version will also be launched, but that one is intended for the Japanese market only. An all-electric model is also set to launch in early 2024.
In another surprising twist, the Crown nameplate won’t just be used on an SUV either. It will be used on a fully remodeled sedan which will re-join the Toyota line-up sometime this year. In short, Toyota is mirroring moves it has successfully done with the Yaris and Corolla nameplates which has spawned off the Yaris Cross and Corolla Cross.
The all-new Toyota Crown SUV and sedan will both be manufactured in Toyota City, Japan which increases its chances of making it into the Philippines.
