The Lexus UX has been a modest success for the brand. Serving as the gateway to Lexus ownership, the small SUV has sold over 240,000 units since its launch in 2018. To keep things fresh, the “Creative Urban Explorer” gets a refresh for 2023.
For starters, Lexus has enhanced the handling and ride of the 2023 Lexus UX by improving its structural rigidity. An additional 20 spot welding points have been added, while the electronic power steering and shock absorbers have been re-tuned as well for a more refined and direct steering response. The standard 18-inch run-flat tires also have a redesigned tread pattern for reduced tire noise.
Lexus has retained the Lexus UX’s powertrain for 2023. The UX 200 packs a 2.0-liter Dynamic Force 4-cylinder engine making 168 horsepower and 205 Nm of torque, while the UX 250h (now the sole powertrain for markets such as the U.S.) ups those figures to 181 horsepower and 300 Nm thanks to the use of the Lexus Hybrid Drive.
Inside, Lexus has updated its cockpit interface to its latest generation system. This means a standard 8-inch or optional 12.3-inch infotainment display. Both feature higher resolutions, and can now be updated continuously via Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard out of the box.
The larger screens also necessitated a tweaking of the cabin layout. The center console, in particular, is new and allowed Lexus to add two USB charging connectors (Type C). It also allows for a larger wireless charging pad. LED interior lighting improves interior usability at night.
Finally, Lexus has added more functionalities to the Lexus Safety System. The performance of the single-camera/millimeter wave radar combo has been expanded to detect cyclists and pedestrians even in low light conditions. It can also detect oncoming vehicles at intersections, and pedestrians crossing the street from the direction toward which the vehicle was traveling. Also featured are functions such as Emergency Steering Assist, which assists steering within the vehicle's lane as cued by the driver.
The refreshed Lexus UX goes on sale globally starting mid-2022.
